Truely IIM

Lynx today showed me a video of IIMA which showcases the infrastructure and facilities and life and social culture of IIMA. Its truly a wonderful video and the Alumni folks who prepared it did true justice to it. Kudos to them to for taking time out of their busy schedules to think and present something of this sort. They actually make time for it by bunking some lectures and dedicated night outs for it. Congratulations to the entire team for a job well done and a truly deserved one. (I will link the video here when I have it handy).

But then, this is my blog and not a single perspective till now. Going off the topic here, but I will surely agree with Samar that he ignited fires of perspective and philosophy in our hearts and today we are really getting good at it. Sorry if that makes you feel a little insecure and I would always be thankful and grateful for this precious gift among so many others. OK, back to perspective.

After seeing the video, a simple straight question came to my mind? How is the video any different from any other colleges' alumni/promotion video. OK the students which created that didn't thought of it a promotion video, and rather tried to showcase their memorable time there. But, I still can't figure out the difference. I am sure pretty similar time would have been experienced at other colleges as well. The lunches, the classes, the late nights, sleeping in classes, and the list goes on... A lot of it even we shared in our BCA times. I mean if you take out the reputation of IIMs in the market, the life is gonna be pretty much same. So, even though I liked the video, I didn't feel as moved as some others would be.

Now the second question which popped up into my head was why was Lynx having this video with her and see it as a motivation video? Are IIMs really the ultimate place to study and you are gonna be super smart to be doing great things ahead in professional career? Well, definitely not. Great people can come from anywhere. A degree from IIM doesn't guarantee that at all. Faculty and services and infrastructure just help you get better. I am not saying its bad thing to keep a video. In fact, she did the right thing to keep it handy and view it often to keep the focus. And with the competition for every place, anything which can help you get through is justified unless it is illegal.

Why does everybody want to get into IIM? Why everybody want to do MBA? Lynx, if you are reading this, I am not raising any questions on your decision for it. Its like the in fashion today. Does people want to get into IIMs because they want to play a key role in decision making process of the prospective organizations where they help the organization as well as society to be better so that its a win-win situation for everyone? I feel its a hypothetical thought. And the reality is people want to get into IIM because they know they will surely get a handsome package. Fuck off what organization they join or what work they do. I mean who cares. As such the feeling of proudness is sky high when getting into IIM, and the moment you get the highest salary in the batch, you just take it to another level. Who cares if you always wished for a similar job ever since and I am not talking in terms of monetary aspects. That's what everybody getting into IIM aspires for. I don't say you should not aspire for good salary, but that should not be the major motivation for doing MBA. A lot of people do it because they are tired of doing the not-so-crap work under some manager and  now don't want to do the same work. Being a manager on one's own is much better. Allows you to enjoy the fruits of the work by people under you without doing anything. Little people and task management which otherwise too you could have done. Or maybe you do get better in terms of management. But, if you did MBA to get rid of the ground level work, I think you are just another money greedy brat. And because everybody is doing this, it doesn't seem wrong at all. It ain't illegal either, so why not give it a shot.

And all this just makes me feel not so good about doing MBA. People need to realize there is more to life than just money. I understand cost of living is very high, but things are still not too bad. And if you realize that life has more to be seen and realized and lived, you don't need hefty packages to sustain happily. The more money you get, the more you crave for it. Contentment is a blessing and feel blessed.
